Duman

Duman is 16 years old and he fled from Iraqi-Kurdistan with his family. He has been in Greece for one year and eight months. He is very keen on playing football and his favourite football player is Cristiano Ronaldo. His friends back home and his new friends in Skaramagas refugee camp used to say that he is a very good player and as he says: “I will become a very good and famous football player”. He is one of the toughest young members of his family. He has got ten siblings.

I have a big family, nine boys and two girls

My name is Jamila Sharafani and I am 41 years old. I live with my children and my husband in Athens. I have a big family, nine boys and two girls. We were born in Mossoul, in Iraq. In Iraq, we used to live in an apartment, like here in Greece. We were sharing the house with my husband’s parents. We do not know when we will go back to Iraq because it is war in Mossoul. We left when we heard that Daech will come to take Mossoul. My husband got shot in his shoulder. We were scared of the war and so we decided to leave. My wife and our eleven children

I am Falah and I am 48 years old. When I was one year old, I lost my dad. I grew up only with my mother. After that, I went to school. I went to school for about five years and then I stopped because we were a very poor family. I tried to help my mother and I started to work in a cement factory. “I just want to see my family all together”

Hello! I am Mayro and I come from Afghanistan, from the city of Herat. My childhood was very good and there was not any war. When the war was declared, I was 17 years old and I had two children. My life was getting worse due to the war. Twenty-two years have passed since I have lost my husband. I have seven children; five boys and two girls. My oldest daughter was 15 years old and my oldest son was 12 years old when their father passed away. Now my children are grow up and the war continues in Afghanistan. We are all humans!

We are all humans! We led a normal life and we had many thoughts for the future. When I was in Afghanistan, I worked as an engineer.
In Afghanistan, the situation was not very good due to the war and we were very sad. Sometimes we had to go somewhere else and we wondered if we will go back or not. Maybe a bomb was dropped and that would cause us death. Maybe we wouldn’t be able to go back home. My siblings were married and later I was married too. Even though I am still alive, my daughter is growing up without me

Hello! Μy name is Omar and I am 28 years old. I was born in Afrin and I was studying in Aleppo for four years. After those four years, we had to choose one language between French and English. I chose to study French but my family complained that French is not so popular. They sent me to a village to study English because they thought that English is more important. Afraid of the trucks, the sea, the ghosts and the lions

In a workshop that took place in Veria’s refugee centre, we read the book “The painter who painted a blue horse” at a group of refugee children. The main theme of the book was to teach children to follow their beliefs and to go against their fears with confidence. In the end, we asked them to draw their fears and put them into a box, so later we could take the fears away.
