Woman from Syria.
I arrived in bus from Germany in 2015, and after having spent a week in Sandholm I was sent to a refugee centre in Sønderborg with my sister and brothers and my parents, where we lived for more than a year and where I started learning Danish. It was in Sønderborg that my family and I got our permanent residence permit, and after that we moved to a temporary housing in Copenhagen, where we lived for 8 months: I enjoyed living there, because every week that was a woman who would come and train dance and gymnastics with us: Together with my sister I would dance hip hop and it was just nice to do something physical. I would also help the other refugees and talk with the adults and play with the kids. And every day I had my Danish language classes, and I would learn more Danish by speaking, reading and writing.
After having lived for 8 months at the temporary housing I got my own apartment with my sister and one of my brothers, and it is a nice apartment: It is 72 square metres and it is located on a busy street with a lot of life and shops and cafes. I am the one who cooks in our house, and so every day I cook different meals such as pasta salad with green vegetables, carrots and potato and cheese. I also make salmon and shrimps, because my sister likes it a lot and it is full of vitamins such as for example d-vitamin. I like to cook but it is not something that I would like to work with in the future.
One of my dreams when I finish my language school is to work as a secretary, because I used to work as a secretary and held a position for 5 years at the mayor’s office in the city where I lived before I fled with my family, and I really enjoyed it. I am grateful that I am in Denmark and hopefully I will be able to earn my own money.
However, I would also like to get more support from the authorities, for example, when it comes to formal and complicated paper work for the state or kommune, because I feel that it is hard to figure out myself. I have had experiences where I was just left to fill out documents myself, and I do not think it is ok, when the authorities should offer to help me.
