First time visiting my family and friends in Greece

My name is Juan Sido, I am from Afrin and I am a refugee. My story begins in 2013 when my family and I left home and went to Turkey because of the war. I stayed there until 2016. Then, I left so as to be reunified with my older brother. After that, we registered to an organization for relocation in Greece.
When I left Turkey, I was with one of my older brothers. We arrived in Chios island where we stayed for three days and then we went to Athens. We stayed in Piraeus for three months and then we moved to Skaramaga’s refugee center. After four months, the programme of relocation was in effect and we registered in that. Almost seven months later, Ireland chose to relocate my brother and I. We waited for nine more months for our flight and so, we moved to Ireland.
Since we were registered in Ireland, they took us to a hotel. We were staying in the hotel for seven months until they could provide us with a home.
Sometimes, I was attending English courses outside the camp and some other times, I was just spending my time at home.
In Ireland, my daily routine is simple. I just eat and go to school. When I go to school, I feel that I am wasting my time because most of the things that I am being taught now, I had learnt them in Greece. Thus, I feel that I am not moving forward in my life. Now, it is the first time visiting my family and friends in Greece.

Η ιστορία μου ξεκινάει από το 2013, όταν εγώ και η οικογένειά μου φύγαμε από το σπίτι μας και πήγαμε στη Τουρκία εξαιτίας του πολέμου. Έμεινα εκεί μέχρι το 2016. Ύστερα έφυγα, με σκοπό να επανασυνδεθώ με τον μεγαλύτερο αδερφό μου. Στη συνέχεια, κάναμε την εγγραφή μας σε μια οργάνωση για μετεγκατάσταση στην Ελλάδα.
Όταν έφυγα από την Τουρκία ήμουν μαζί με έναν από τους μεγαλύτερους αδελφούς μου. Φτάσαμε στη Χίο που μείναμε για τρεις μέρες και μετά πήγαμε στην Αθήνα. Μείναμε στον Πειραιά για τρεις μήνες και μετά πήγαμε στο κέντρο φιλοξενίας προσφύγων, στο Σκαραμαγκά. Μετά από τέσσερις μήνες, το πρόγραμμα της μετεγκατάστασης τέθηκε σε ισχύ και κάναμε την εγγραφή μας σε αυτό. Σχεδόν επτά μήνες αργότερα, η Ιρλανδία επέλεξε να μετεγκαταστήσει εμένα και τον αδερφό μου. Περιμέναμε εννιά μήνες ακόμα για τη πτήση μας και έτσι, πήγαμε στην Ιρλανδία.
Εφόσον είχαμε εγγραφεί στην Ιρλανδία, μας πήγαν σε ένα ξενοδοχείο. Μείναμε στο ξενοδοχείο για επτά μήνες, έως ότου μπόρεσαν να μας παρέχουν ένα σπίτι.
Μερικές φορές, παρακολουθούσα μαθήματα αγγλικών έξω από το κέντρο φιλοξενίας και κάποιες άλλες φορές απλά περνούσα τον χρόνο μου στο σπίτι.
Στην Ιρλανδία, η καθημερινότητά μου είναι απλή. Τρώω και πηγαίνω στο σχολείο. Όταν πηγαίνω στο σχολείο, νιώθω ότι σπαταλώ τον χρόνο μου καθώς τα περισσότερα πράγματα που μας μαθαίνουν τώρα, τα έχω μάθει στην Ελλάδα. Επομένως, νιώθω πως δεν εξελίσσομαι.
Τώρα είναι η πρώτη φορά που επισκέπτομαι την οικογένεια και τους φίλους μου στην Ελλάδα.

“My daughter was born here”

I wish to remain anonymous. I am 24 years old and I came from Syria with my wife. I am married and my daughter was born here.
When we arrived in Greece, it was the 22nd of July, 2016. At first, we were staying in Moria’s refugee centre. In the camp, we did not have any money and the food was really bad. Sometimes, we felt that the chicken was not well cooked. In parallel, we were staying with many people in the same place.
Some days later, they moved us to another refugee center in the region called “Kara Tepe”. The weather on the island was very warm and we were always trying to stay under the shadow.
When my wife got pregnant, an NGO called “Caritas” sent us to stay in a hotel for refugees. However, even there, the conditions were not so good. The workers in the hotel did not care a lot for us. When the time arrived for the labor and delivery of our baby, we were sent to Athens city by airplane. Fortunately, we did not have to pay for anything. I remember that I slept for three days in the hospital, and later they provided us a hotel room near the hospital.
After a period of time, another organization moved us again. Now, we are staying with two more families in the same flat. Of course, even this situation is difficult. We are six people staying in two rooms, and we only get the financial aid of 320 euros per family. I also have some problems with my eyes, so it is not possible for me to work in any kind of work, but I can work, as far as they want, as a translator. I speak three languages.
I have many expenses, especially now, while our baby is growing up. The winter is coming and I do not even have money to buy clothes.
What happened in Syria is like a big game. I hope, in the near future, Syria to be a free country without someone to intervene. I wish, with my heart that one day I will return to Syria but not in Syria that is right now, in this bad situation.

Είμαι 24 ετών και ήρθα από τη Συρία με τη σύζυγό μου. Είμαι παντρεμένος και η κόρη μου γεννήθηκε εδώ.
Ήταν 22 Ιουλίου 2016, όταν φτάσαμε στην Ελλάδα. Στην αρχή, μείναμε στο κέντρο φιλοξενίας προσφύγων, στη Μόρια. Στο κέντρο φιλοξενίας προσφύγων δεν είχαμε χρήματα και το φαγητό ήταν χάλια. Μερικές φορές, νομίζαμε πως το κοτόπουλο δεν ήταν καλά ψημένο. Παράλληλα, μείναμε με πολλά άτομα στο ίδιο μέρος.
Μερικές μέρες αργότερα, μας έστειλαν σε ένα άλλο κέντρο φιλοξενίας προσφύγων, στην περιοχή «Kara Tepe». Ο καιρός στο νησί ήταν πολύ ζεστός και συνέχεια προσπαθούσαμε να μείνουμε κάτω από την σκιά.
Όταν η σύζυγός μου έμεινε έγκυος, μια ΜΚΟ που ονομάζεται «Caritas» μας έστειλε να μείνουμε σε ένα ξενοδοχείο που φιλοξενούσε πρόσφυγες. Ωστόσο, ακόμα και εκεί, η κατάσταση δεν ήταν πολύ καλή. Όσοι εργάζονταν στο ξενοδοχείο δεν νοιάζονταν πολύ για εμάς. Όταν έφτασε η στιγμή για τη γέννηση του μωρού μας, μας έστειλαν στην Αθήνα με αεροπλάνο. Ευτυχώς, δεν χρειάστηκε να πληρώσουμε κάτι. Θυμάμαι πως κοιμήθηκα για τρεις μέρες στο νοσοκομείο και αργότερα μας παρείχαν ένα δωμάτιο σε ένα ξενοδοχείο που βρίσκεται δίπλα στο νοσοκομείο.
Μετά από λίγο καιρό, μια άλλη οργάνωση μας μετακίνησε ξανά. Τώρα, μένουμε με ακόμα δύο οικογένειες στο ίδιο διαμέρισμα. Βεβαίως, ακόμα και αυτή η κατάσταση είναι δύσκολη. Είμαστε έξι άτομα και μένουμε σε δύο δωμάτια και η μόνη οικονομική βοήθεια που έχουμε είναι 320 ευρώ για κάθε οικογένεια. Επίσης, έχω κάποια προβλήματα όρασης και γι’αυτό το λόγο δεν μπορώ να εργαστώ σε καμία είδους δουλειά, αλλά μπορώ να εργαστώ, αρκεί να θέλουν, ως μεταφραστής. Επιπλέον, μιλάω τρεις γλώσσες.
Έχω πολλά έξοδα, ειδικά τώρα που μεγαλώνει το μωρό μας. Ο χειμώνας έρχεται και δεν έχω καθόλου χρήματα για να αγοράσω ρούχα.
Ό,τι συνέβη στη Συρία μοιάζει με ένα μεγάλο παιχνίδι. Ελπίζω, στο κοντινό μέλλον, η Συρία να είναι μια ελεύθερη χώρα, χωρίς να εμπλέκεται κάποιος. Εύχομαι, με όλη μου την καρδιά, μια μέρα να επιστρέψω στη Συρία, αλλά όχι στη Συρία όπως είναι τώρα, σε αυτή τη κακή κατάσταση.

My name is Humari, I am 57 years old and I come from Afghanistan. I was born in Kunduz. When I got married, I was very young. I was just 16 years old. I have got seven children. Three of my sons went to Germany three years ago and one of them went to Switzerland. The latter is very sick because back home, in Afghanistan, a bomb had exploded on his foot. One of my daughters lives in Sweden and she is married. With me here, in Greece, I have only my youngest son and daughter.
My husband was working as a General of the army. Now, he is very sick because he was shot in Afghanistan. Moreover, he is not able to work, as he is 62 years old. Our everyday life in Greece is very hard and we deal with many issues, as we do not know how to speak Greek. We just want to be reunited with our children in Germany.

Ονομάζομαι Humari, είμαι 57 ετών και προέρχομαι από το Αφγανιστάν. Γεννήθηκα στο Κουντούζ. Όταν παντρεύτηκα, ήμουν πολύ νέα. Ήμουν μόλις 16 ετών. Έχω επτά παιδιά. Τρεις από τους γιούς μου πήγαν στη Γερμανία τρία χρόνια πριν και ένας από αυτούς πήγε στην Ελβετία. Ο τελευταίος είναι πολύ άρρωστος, επειδή πίσω στο σπίτι, στο Αφγανιστάν, μια βόμβα εξερράγη στο πόδι του. Μία από τις κόρες μου ζει στη Σουηδία και είναι παντρεμένη. Μαζί μου εδώ, στην Ελλάδα, έχω μόνο τον μικρότερο γιο και τη μικρότερη κόρη μου.
Ο σύζυγός μου εργαζόταν ως στρατηγός του στρατού. Τώρα όμως είναι πολύ άρρωστος, επειδή είχε πυροβοληθεί όταν ήταν στο Αφγανιστάν. Επιπλέον, δεν μπορεί να εργαστεί, καθώς είναι 62 ετών. Η καθημερινότητά μας στην Ελλάδα είναι πολύ δύσκολη και αντιμετωπίζουμε πολλά προβλήματα, αφού δεν γνωρίζουμε να μιλάμε ελληνικά. Το μόνο που θέλουμε είναι να επανενωθούμε με τα παιδιά μας στην Γερμανία.

Farokh

My name is Farokh and I come from Afghanistan. I was born in Kunduz. There, I was working as a tailor and I got married when I was 21 years old. I have got six children; four sons and two daughters. I have been in Greece for about two years now. I came with all my family, except one of my boys. He is 14 years old and he lives in Germany. He has been in Germany for about one year and four months. We want to go to Germany as well, but it takes time and a lot of documents. All the other children are here with me and fortunately, this period, two of my children are going to school.
We have completed the whole procedure of documents to go to Germany, but we are still waiting. My husband has passed away. Taliban killed my husband in Afghanistan. After that, I decided to come here, in Greece, so as later to go to Germany.
My everyday life is very hard here. I have many problems, and every day is the same and very boring. One of my nice moments is when I cook to my children their favourite traditional Afghan dish, Qabili Palau.

Ονομάζομαι Farokh και προέρχομαι από το Αφγανιστάν. Γεννήθηκα στο Κουντούζ. Εκεί, εργάστηκα ως ράφτρα και παντρεύτηκα όταν ήμουν 21 ετών. Έχω έξι παιδιά: τέσσερις γιούς και δύο κόρες. Βρίσκομαι στην Ελλάδα εδώ και δύο χρόνια. Ήρθα με όλη την οικογένειά μου, εκτός από ένα από τα αγόρια μου. Εκείνος είναι 14 ετών και ζει στη Γερμανία. Βρίσκεται στη Γερμανία εδώ και ένα χρόνο και τέσσερις μήνες. Θέλουμε και εμείς να πάμε στη Γερμανία, αλλά χρειάζεται χρόνο και πολλά έγγραφα. Όλα τα υπόλοιπα παιδιά είναι εδώ, μαζί μου και ευτυχώς αυτή την περίοδο, δύο από τα παιδιά μου πηγαίνουν στο σχολείο.
Έχουμε ολοκληρώσει όλη την διαδικασία των εγγράφων που χρειάζονται για να πάμε στη Γερμανία, όμως ακόμα περιμένουμε. Ο σύζυγός μου έχει πεθάνει. Οι Ταλιμπάν σκότωσαν τον σύζυγό μου στο Αφγανιστάν. Μετά από αυτό, αποφάσισα να έρθω εδώ, στην Ελλάδα, έτσι ώστε αργότερα, να πάω στη Γερμανία.
Η καθημερινότητά μου είναι πολύ δύσκολη εδώ. Αντιμετωπίζω πολλά προβλήματα και η κάθε μέρα είναι ίδια και πολύ βαρετή. Μια από τις όμορφες στιγμές μου είναι όταν μαγειρεύω στα παιδιά μου το αγαπημένο παραδοσιακό αφγανικό φαγητό τους, το Qabili Palau (καμπούλι παλάο).

In the afternoon, I go to training for two hours. I do kickboxing. I have won two medals and I have taken two belts and a certificate of attendance. I would like to be a police officer or to be involved in kickboxing professionally.

Τα απογεύματα πηγαίνω για δύο ώρες σε προπονήσεις. Ασχολούμαι με το κικ μπόξινγκ. Έχω πάρει δύο μετάλλια, 2 ζώνες και ένα δίπλωμα συμμετοχής. I am Zobeda, I am 34 years old and I came from Afghanistan with my family. I have three children; one son and two daughters. In the morning, the first thing that I do is to prepare breakfast and then to send my children to school. When I return, I start cleaning and cooking for the family. I really like cooking “Kitchiri”, which consists of meat and black rice.
We have been here for almost three years. For now, we have a nice house but if it was a little bit bigger, it would be nicer. Back in Afghanistan, I was working as a teacher for the first and second grade of primary school. I like sewing and making jewellery. When I was at Elliniko, I was making jewellery and many people liked it. I really miss my family and my parents. I would like to stay in Greece if I had a good job.

Είμαι η Zobeda, είμαι 34 ετών και ήρθα από το Αφγανιστάν με την οικογένειά μου. Έχω τρία παιδιά: ένα γιό και δύο κόρες. Το πρωί, το πρώτο πράγμα που κάνω είναι να ετοιμάσω το πρωινό και μετά να πάω τα παιδιά μου στο σχολείο. Όταν επιστρέφω, ξεκινάω να καθαρίζω και να μαγειρεύω για την οικογένεια. Μου αρέσει πολύ να μαγειρεύω το «Kitchiri», το οποίο αποτελείται από κρέας και μαύρο ρύζι.
Βρισκόμαστε εδώ περίπου τρία χρόνια. Προς το παρόν έχουμε ένα καλό σπίτι, αλλά αν ήταν λίγο μεγαλύτερο, θα ήταν καλύτερα. Στο Αφγανιστάν, εργαζόμουν ως δασκάλα της πρώτης και δευτέρας τάξης του δημοτικού σχολείου. Μου αρέσει να πλέκω και να φτιάχνω κοσμήματα. Όταν ήμουν στον Ελληνικό, έφτιαχνα κοσμήματα που άρεσαν σε πολλά άτομα. Η οικογένεια και οι γονείς μου μου λείπουν πάρα πολύ. Θα ήθελα να μείνω στην Ελλάδα, αν είχα μια καλή δουλειά.

“A story that I will never forget”

My name is Mohamed Azimi Asef Ostadazim. I am 39 years old and I have come to Greece with my family. My wife and our three children.
We have been in Greece for almost three years. We came here in order to go to Germany. We went near the borders of FYROM but, because they were closed, we came to Athens.
At first, we were staying in Elliniko’s refugee centre. In there, I started giving lessons to refugees. I was teaching them how to draw. I was staying in Elliniko’s camp for one year and a half. Almost 180 students participated in my class. After a while, we conducted an exhibition inside the Elliniko’s refugee centre. Some politicians and many journalists visited the exhibition. I was interviewed by many media, as well as Al Jazeera. One year and six months later, my family and I went to Thiva’s refugee centre for the next four months. Afterwards, we came back to Athens.
Twenty-six years ago, I started calligraphy back home, in Afghanistan. I was a famous calligrapher in Afghanistan and I was working as an advertiser. When the Taliban came to my city, I went to Iran for six years and then I returned to Afghanistan. I always wanted to help people, thus I established a learning center for writing, reading and calligraphy. When the Taliban were in Afghanistan, it was very difficult to establish a learning center and I faced many difficulties. The Taliban did not allow to teach people and I gave lessons secretly. After a few months, the Taliban learnt about the learning center. In parallel, I was working in the advertising industry.
One day, a car came and a man entered my working place. I understood that he was an Arab. He said that he liked very much the place and he told me his name. He also said that his father was a very well known Arab businessman and he owned a company in Afghanistan. He was interested in creating a route from Iran to Afghanistan. So, for that reason, he wanted to make a billboard. After I completed the task, I went to their organization to present it. After a while, I realised that the people who were working there were all Taliban. However, I had already made the billboard and he liked my work. The next day, he came again to my store and he asked for more work. So, after a while, we became friends.
I remember vividly one time that I went to his office and next to his chair there was a gun. Every time I went to his office, I needed a translator because he was speaking Arabic. One day the translator said that he could not come inside this time, and so I entered by myself. The Arab businessman was searching online something for Saudi Arabia. After a while, I asked him if he is a terrorist and if he came to my country to create problems. He was wondering why I was asking this question to him. I answered: “Because your boss is a Taliban”. He only replied that he is not the leader of the Taliban and that he only wanted to create a route from Iran to Herat, and for that reason, he was bringing tools and machines to my country.
When on the 11th of September the twin towers in the USA fell, the Americans came to Afghanistan, and when they came to Afghanistan, all Taliban left. After a long period, when the Taliban left Afghanistan, I went to the Arab businessman’s office and I was looking for him. However, someone from the office informed me that he was not anymore in the office and that he has left to hide. He also said that the Arab businessman was living now with Osama bin Laden.
Two months later, I learnt that this man was on the blacklist of Americans. After that, I was thinking that for a period of time I was friend with a very dangerous man. All this situation is a story that I will never forget…Thankfully, God protected me!
I decided to share this story because most media say it in a different way. All people have some stories from their lives and it is good for those to be shared.

Hasan

Hasan is 5 years old and he came to Greece with his family, from Iraqi-Kurdistan, one year ago. In the beginning, Hasan and his family were staying in Skaramagas refugee centre, but now they live in an apartment, in Athens city centre. Hasan prefers to watch videos on the phone and he likes to listen to music and dance. He really likes playing football and he wants to go to school to learn more languages. “He is the youngest member of our family but also the toughest”, as his parents mention.

Ο Hasan είναι 5 χρονών και πριν από ένα χρόνο ήρθε στην Ελλάδα με την οικογένειά του, από το Ιρακινό Κουρδιστάν. Στην αρχή, ο Hasan και η οικογένειά του έμειναν στο κέντρο φιλοξενίας προσφύγων, στο Σκαραμαγκά. Τώρα μένουν σε ένα διαμέρισμα, στο κέντρο της Αθήνας. Προτιμάει να βλέπει βίντεο στο κινητό και του αρέσει να ακούει μουσική και να χορεύει. Του αρέσει πολύ να παίζει ποδόσφαιρο και θέλει να πάει στο σχολείο για να μάθει περισσότερες γλώσσες. “Ο Hasan είναι το πιο νέο και δυνατό μέλος της οικογένειάς μας”, όπως αναφέρουν οι γονείς του.
